The
School of Graduate and Continuing Education in collaboration with the other
Schools at Marist is proposing to offer the BS in Integrative Studies,
with initial concentrations in Leadership and Communication, fully online
commencing in March 2005. Since this will be Marist’s first fully online
program at the undergraduate level, it will require approval of a “Change
in Format”
by the NYS Education Department (SED) and, therefore, approval by College’s
Board of Trustees before it can be submitted to SED .Since
the Integrative Studies program already has internal approval, no further
internal approvals are required to offer it, or new concentrations within
it, online.Students
completing the Program will earn a BS degree in Integrative Studies with
initial concentrations in Leadership and Communication and perhaps other
concentrations in the future. The Program will be fully online, delivered
entirely with web-based courses.
This GCE initiative had been developed in collaboration with other
Schools both for courses in the concentrations and a number of elective
courses.
The
new online delivery of the Integrative Studies Program will add a valuable
new way for students to access the College’s innovative, interdisciplinary,
baccalaureate degree completion program, which, over the past 20 years,
has enabled hundreds of adult students in the mid-Hudson Valley to complete
their undergraduate studies.It will
address a need that is supported by the market research conducted by GCE
over the past year.
Online delivery of the Integrative Studies program will build on the College’s significant experience in the area of e-learning education. Online MBA and MPA degrees have been offered for several years at the College and have realized great success with students in the Hudson Valley and beyond. In2002, an online version of the Information Systems M.S. program was designed and now is being offered. Fall 2004 the College also was approved to offer a MA in Communication.Beginning in Fall 2003, the College also began to offer a limited selection of online, undergraduate courses. The advent of online, undergraduate courses and the growing awareness of Marist’s fully online graduate program has stimulated tremendous interest in the College moving into the delivery of a fully online undergraduate degree. Moving the Integrative Studies Program to an online format is the College’s response to provide the desired, fully online access to its undergraduate offerings. As designed, the new online Integrative Studies Program will enable students to elect study on a full or part-time basis. All courses will be formatted and offered using Educator in an e-learning environment.
The online Integrative Studies Program with concentrations in leadership and Communication not only will build on the College’s prior experience with distance learning at the graduate level but also on its now four-year old, highly-successful experiment with a cohort, hybrid delivery of a related program in Organizational Communication and Leadership (OLC) within the Integrative Studies framework. The OLC program has featured a combination of classroom and web based delivery and has given Marist faculty valuable experience in using the Educator platform at the undergraduate level.Since its inception in 2000, over 200 persons have enrolled on OLC, drawn from a three county area.It is anticipated that persons with similar interests and goals will be drawn to the new Program from a larger region (CT, MA, NYS, NJ, and PA) from which traditional undergraduates are drawn and therefore the Marist name is known.Consequently, the new Program will extend the opportunity for a quality Marist education to persons heretofore not able to access undergraduate Programs at the College.
1.Many
hundreds of inquiries over the past two years, in response to marketing
activities for online graduate programs or current campus-based or site-based
programs, have indicated an interest in an online undergraduate program.
Many of these inquiries indicated an interest in communication or organizational
(business-related) studies.
2.Contacts
with organizations in the region and beyond have indicated an interest
in an online undergraduate program and especially one that provided a mechanism
to “grow organizational leaders” internally
3.Representatives
from community colleges in the region and beyond have suggested that a
Marist online degree completion program would be attractive to persons
with Associate Degrees now in professional positions and desiring a flexible
way to complete a baccalaureate degree.
4.Formal
and informal consultations with external experts and advisory groups have
supported the decision to offer an UG degree program online.Consultation
has occurred directly or indirectly with the following:
qELearners.com
qMaguire
Associates
qCAEL
qDirector
of Marketing, Chapman University
qGCE
Advisory Board
5.Additionally,
inferences can be drawn from the success of the Organizational Leadership
and Communication (OLC) program in the
Mid-Hudson
region.Over 200 persons have enrolled
in the OLC program
since
its inception in 2000, drawn from the three county area. It is
anticipated
that persons with similar interests and goals will be drawn to
theOS
program from a larger region (CT, MA, NYS, NJ, and PA) where
Marist
is known- persons heretofore not
able to access undergraduate
Programs
